Three teams from Connecticut competed at NAQT’s 2018 High School National Championship Tournament (HSNCT). The A team from Darien High School, led in scoring by senior captain Julia Tong and sophomore John Phipps, went 8-2 in preliminary rounds and tied for 20th after advancing to the fifth round of the double-elimination playoff. Wilton, a two-player team of brothers Alexander and Lukas Koutsoukos, went 6-4 in the preliminary rounds, meaning they would start the playoffs already in the losers’ bracket. They lost to East Chapel Hill (NC) A to place tied for 105th in the 352-team field. The B team from Darien High School went 5-5 and placed 191st.
Alexander Koutsoukos of Wilton received an All-Star award for finishing as the third-best individual scorer for the preliminary rounds of the tournament, while Alex DelVecchio of Darien B received a Rising Star award as one of the top-scoring freshmen. Plano West A (TX) defeated Hunter A (New York, NY) in the first game of an advantaged final to win the tournament.
Darien High School was the lone Connecticut representative at PACE’s 2018 National Scholastic Championship. The three-player team of Julia Tong, John Phipps, and Vincent Xu placed 57th out of the 96 teams in attendance after placing 6th of 8 in their preliminary pool, 3rd of 6 in their playoff pool, and 1st of 4 in their super-playoff pool. Thomas Jefferson A (Alexandria, VA) defeated Dublin Scioto (OH) in the first game of an advantaged final to win the tournament.
