September 24, 2018

Seven Connecticut schools kicked off the 2018-2019 Quiz Bowl season on September 22nd at Yale’s 14th annual Fall Academic Tournament (FAcT), playing NAQT’s introductory IS-178A set. Teams represented Suffield High School, Woodland High School, Darien High School, Greens Farms Academy, Bethel High School, Wilton High School, and Middlesex Middle School. Impressively, 10 out of the 14 teams in the field were from Connecticut, and 5 of them made the tournament’s top playoff bracket.

A two person team from Greens Farms Academy won the tournament 360-235 in a close final against Darien High School’s B team. Darien B had earlier upset Darien A by 10 points to earn the right to play Greens Farms in the final, and Darien A ultimately placed 4th after losing to Barrington High School from Rhode Island. Wilton High School, another two person team consisting of the Koutsoukos brothers, handed Greens Farms Academy their only loss in the tournament, and placed fifth overall. Darien’s C team qualified for the top playoff bracket after going 3-2 in prelims, and ultimately placed 7th.

Greens Farms Academy’s top scorer Karsten Rynearson also won the tournament’s top scorer award, scoring an impressive 160.83 points per game (PPG). Alexander Koutsoukos from Wilton followed in 3rd place with 110.83 PPG. John Phipps from Darien A also broke 100 PPG with 109.17 PPG, placing 4th. Darien B’s leading scorer Alex DelVecchio placed 7th, with 70 PPG. One-man team Brian Gallegos from Bethel High School placed 9th individually, while Charles Schwarz from Woodland High School rounded out the top 10.

The tournament was a fantastic start to the season for all teams involved. We wish them the best of luck during the year, and can’t wait to see them at future tournaments!
