Karsten Rynearson and Anjo Therattil take home top scorer honors at Princeton’s High School Academic
In a rare event, two players from Connecticut took home top scorer from both divisions of Princeton’s High School Academic Tournament (PHSAT) XXVI on Saturday, September 29th. Freshmen Karsten Rynearson and Anjo Therattil both played solo for Greens Farms Academy and Wilton High School respectively; Rynearson competed in the tournament’s Nationals division, while Therattil competed in the Standard division. In addition to achieving top individual honors, both placed highly in the regular tournament, with Rynearson placing 9th out of 23 teams and Therattil placing 4th out of 11 teams.
In the Nationals division, Rynearson went 4-1 in preliminary rounds and upset eventual tournament runner-up Wilmington Charter Quiz Bowl, ultimately just missing the top bracket due to a circle of death from morning rounds. Despite this setback, Rynearson went undefeated in the afternoon and ended the tournament in 9th place a 11-1 record. In the Standard Division, which was a 11 team round robin, Therattil achieved a 6-4 record and placed 4th overall, only being defeated by the 3 teams ahead of him.
Playing Quiz Bowl solo is very difficult, and Karsten and Anjo performed well against some of the top teams in the region. Congratulations to both of them for their achievements- we’re excited to see what they accomplish in the future!
